Kayser, A. Kellner, A. Holzapfel, H.-W. van der Bilt, G. Warner, S. Gras, R. Movie 22: 3D visualization of a rock sample and its application for core analysis Europe and Global Perspectives during the 3D visions session. It was obtained by recording from the screen during an immersive 3D presentation. The first part of the movie gives a short overview about location and sedimentology of the sample. Different methods of core analysis and the uncertainty related to them are discussed. The advantage of scanning rock samples using Microfocus Computer Tomography (µCT) is explained. In the second part the results of the visualization of the data volume using Inside Reality are shown. By applying different colour maps the outline of the 1 cm3 small sample and the pore space inside the rock volume are visualized. The µCT-data can be compared with available thin section data. Panning through the dataset allows a quick overview of the heterogeneity of the sample. The difference in pore space between tight and open laminae is highlighted in a volume window. The forth part shows the detection of connectivity in 3D space using a voxel-growing tool. Barite cement, calcite cement and pore space are tracked. The advantage in comparison to 2D data is apparent. The last part compares a 2D thin section-like view with the high-resolution visualization of quartz grains in a volume window. Pore space and grain contacts are clearly visible. By choosing an appropriate colour map only the pores and pore throats are rendered in blue colour. Immersive 3D stereo allows the user to walk through the pores. 3 D space;scanning rock samples;visualization;Immersive 3 D stereo;core analysis Europe;pore space;2 D data;volume window;1 cm 3;CT;immersive 3 D presentation;3 D visions session;colour;Geology 2020-01-10
